A Reminder to Be Present

It is so easy to spend our time consumed with either our past or our futures.  When we do this, we fail to create tomorrow’s pleasant past, and we lessen our chances at a better future.  We miss the present opportunity.

We have to work at being present in the moment.

We know this, but we need reminders on occasion.

Take 4 minutes and watch this video by Propaganda.  I think you’ll be glad that you did.  (spoiler… don’t try to multi-task on your phone while you watch… he deals with that specifically! :)

What do you think?  Is this something you needed to hear today?

What can you do differently so that you are present in the moment?

    Hi Mike,

While I may not express it as interestingly as Propaganda, the call to living in the moment is one that I adhere to and try to pass along to my children. My friends sometimes find it upsetting that I treat my cell phone like a land-line — retrieving it from my desk, or the top of the fridge, or wherever I last left it only when I’m ready to listen. Voicemails can wait. Emails can wait. Text messages can wait. When my children want my attention, they should never be made to wait.

The past and the future are both important, but the only time over which we have any discretion at all is the present.

Not only did I need to hear this when you posted it but I have needed to hear it multiple times since then. How true it is that we are either focused on the past that we are just too stunned to be functional now or we try so hard to prepare for something we have no idea will ever come. Ray I appreciate your line saying “When my children want my attention, they should never be made to wait.” I can clearly see how many time I have failed my children and my wife because I allowed other meaningless things get in the way of the meaningful ones.

Ray & Steve….Sorry I’m just now responding! We are in the process of moving and I am only able to grab internet access via my phone and coffee shops! :) Thanks for your responses. I definitely relate to the struggle. It’s way easier to talk about “being present” than it is to practice the discipline. It’s work, but it’s good work. Have a great week.
